Nationally Recognised Training for Solid Fuel Heating Professionals

Join NZHHA to Get Started

NZHHA provides the only structured, council-recognised training pathway for solid fuel heating technicians in New Zealand. Whether you’re new to the industry or working toward certification, our training prepares you to deliver safe, compliant, and professional work.

Only NZHHA members are eligible to enroll in training courses. If you’re ready to certify your team or grow your professional credibility, you’re in the right place.

Step-by-Step Certification for Installers and Servicers

NZHHA training is designed to build capability and ensure long-term compliance. Each course follows a national standard and is recognised by councils and industry regulators.

Upcoming Training
  • Introduction to Solid Fuel Heating

This is the entry-level course and a prerequisite for all certification pathways. It’s ideal for staff, retailers, new technicians, or anyone wanting foundational knowledge.

    • One-day course
    • Covers core safety, appliance function, and key compliance factors
    • Required before enrolling in SFAIT or SFAST
    • Includes course workbook and discussion of AS/NZS 2918:2001
  • Solid Fuel Appliance Installation Technician (SFAIT)

The core certification for installers. This course builds on the Intro and prepares participants to safely install wood burners and flue systems to NZ Code standards.

    • One-day course + post-training audit
    • Audit validates practical work completed on-site
    • Certified technicians receive NZHHA registration, photo ID card, and listing
    • Must hold public liability insurance and complete logbook from Intro
  • Solid Fuel Appliance Servicing Technician (SFAST)

Designed for members delivering maintenance, repairs, or chimney servicing.

    • One-day course focused on flue safety, fire risk prevention, and system upkeep
    • Certification requires completion of Intro course and practical competency
    • Certified members receive ID card and are added to the NZHHA servicing register
  • Refresher Courses

To maintain certification, SFAIT and SFAST technicians must complete a refresher every two years.

    • One-day update covering technical changes, safety trends, and Code clarifications
    • Helps ensure continued recognition by councils and insurers
